If you’re going to a conference or networking event, LinkedIn is a must-use tool! There are many opportunities available to you when you use LinkedIn in coordination with events.
Here’s a timeline for how to use LinkedIn, to work every room at the event.
Before the Event
Using the list of people and presenters attending the event, identify who you want to meet with (based on your business goals). Find their profiles on LinkedIn, connect and set a meeting time with them.
By doing this you’ll:
- Save precious time by meeting only people you’ve pre-established can help you meet your business goals
- Be more relevant having read their LinkedIn profile. (And vice-versa.)
During the Event
If you see someone you want to talk to across the room, find their profile on your LinkedIn mobile app. Read their profile. Then approach them with something intelligent based on what you just learned from reviewing their profile.
Conference speakers are leaders in their field, and good people to know.
After the presentation, thank them. Later, request to connect on LinkedIn. (Most presenters will accept your invitation.) Once they’re a first connection, send an update about their wonderful presentation and use the mention feature so they know you’re promoting them. (Add a picture of them speaking for impact.)
Write a LinkedIn update, with insights about what you’ve learned during the event. Include the conference or session hashtag, and even a photo. By doing this you will:
- Build your brand by showing you’re at an important event
- Build your thought leadership by sharing insights with your network
After the Event
If you make a connection with someone at the conference, invite them to connect on LinkedIn with a personal message reminding them how you know them with a request to follow up in some way.
Follow the conference hashtag on Twitter. This is a fantastic way to learn what’s happening at the conference you may not have known about.
Social selling is something you integrate into your business development practices. It should enhance and improve you ability to be successful. And one of the most powerful ways to accomplish that is to use it in coordination with live events.
