You would never give someone your business card without learning something about them or saying something personal to them. In this same manner, it’s always better to send a customized invitation to someone on LinkedIn.
Although it’s common practice for people to send the invitation template LinkedIn provides, “I’d like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn.”, you don’t really want to be common, do you?
It’s not going to get you very far with someone if you invite them to connect, without saying who you are or why you want to connect.
For a long time, it was not possible to customize a LinkedIn invitation on mobile.
Finally, there is a way.
STEP 1: FROM LINKEDIN’S MOBILE APP, GO TO THE PROFILE OF THE PERSON YOU WANT TO CONNECT TO.
If you were to click the blue Connect button at the bottom of the screen, the automated message would be sent.
Instead, click on the box with the arrow (on Android, click on the three vertical dots) in the upper right hand corner of your screen.
STEP 2: CLICK ON “CUSTOMIZE INVITE”
STEP 3: WRITE YOUR PERSONALIZED MESSAGE AND CLICK SEND
(Note: On Android, “Send” is the right-facing arrow at the top of the screen.)
Now, as soon as you meet someone, you can send them a personalized invitation without having to wait until you get back to your desk.
